Development history
nanotol is a further development of the previously known lotus effect
When Prof. Wilhelm Barthlott of the University of Bonn discovered the lotus effect in 1992, the patent application was made quickly and initial cooperation contracts with industry were signed. But the success of the first commercial "lotus effect" products did not last long. In some situations the artificial roughness of the surface (the cause of the effect) turned out to be a disadvantage and the desired success turned into the opposite.
Dipl.-Ing. Mike Friedrich and the research and development department of Ewabo Chemie GmbH & Co. KG began their research with this background. Using the newest research findings in nanotechnology, a surface coating was to be developed that had the positive properties of the lotus effect without the negative effect of artificial roughness.
With nanotol®, Mike Friedrich made a decisive breakthrough – a special product from nanotechnology with previously unknown durability.
In 2006 it was tested for food safety – nanotol is the only nano sealant on the market that is food safe acc. to §31 of the food, commodities, and animal feed law, which means that surfaces treated with nanotol do not emit any substances and can thus be used in the foodstuff industry and in stores (meat counter).
